I’ve met a few people who seem born to be entrepreneurs. They make it look easy to succeed and to fail, and I know that cannot be easy. I just look around and see how many people succeed in spite of themselves as opposed to those who really understand how to be a successful business person.
I tried to make a list of what the characteristics of the people who were doing well, and then I did some reading online. Here is a short list of the common traits I found:
- You have to like what you are doing. Be passionate. If you don’t you’ll never motivate yourself to be truly successful.
- Be serious about what you are doing. Get organized, and plan your business and your finances. It’s too easy to be distracted from what is important otherwise.
- Be confident and professional. Sell yourself and your company. If you don’t do it no one will. Get involved in your community and make connections. Be available.
- Find your niche and become an expert in it.
- Know when you need to delegate – it’s about understanding your own weaknesses.
- Use technology to educate and sell yourself. Use it to run your company wisely. You may be amazed how much you can do for free.
- Make sure you surround yourself with good people – employees and advisors.
- Take time for yourself. Burnout is a real danger for the self-employed. You may have to create rules for yourself about lunch breaks, turning off your phone at family times, and taking time off.
